Breakdown Cover Articles
History of Green Flag
The Green Flag breakdown operation is the baby of the three main organisations which look after the motorists of the U.K.
Whereas the RAC was formed in 1897 and the AA in 1905, Green Flag came into existence as National Breakdown in 1971 and has developed a different approach to that of its rivals, earning itself the position as number three.
It covers the car, not the driver, and it does not run it’s own team of fitters, but uses a vast network of independent fitters throughout the U.K. Nor does it offer insurances, or other allied services; it proudly boasts that it is there to concentrate on the breakdown alone and not try to be all things to all men.
It’s an approach which has seen it gather quite a lot of success, now having over 5 million members and increasing its size all the time. They reckon they get called out to over one million calls a year and also claim an average 40 minute response time. They also claim that over 80% of vehicles are repaired at the roadside.
Having started out in 1971 as National Breakdown, it was rebranded as Green Flag in 1994, continuing to develop and promote its car-based approach to the breakdown concept.
This point has been further emphasized since the acquisition of its two large rivals by major companies.
It offers very competitive plans for the motorist and tries to keep on the right side of the prices of its larger rivals, although pricing has been very aggressive over the last few years and each group tries to gain the upper hand.
So, if you fancy trying the Green Flag approach to breakdown cover and think you might prefer their car, rather than person based idea, and think that its best not to have your breakdown company selling you all kinds of insurance, then they are worth a try.
