Don't be a part of this winter's car breakdown nightmare
Let's be honest. When winter time comes around as it has with a vengeance these last few days, those of us snowed in at home take a look at the TV and see the poor person with his car broken down by the side of the road and say to our selves" Am I glad that that's not me."
Yet car breakdowns can happen to anyone, especially when the car we are driving is being exposed to the most difficult of conditions, as they have been over the recent weekend. With indications that the winter of 2012/2012 is liable to be as tough as that of last year, drivers need to know that if a breakdown occurs that they as prepared for it as can be.
It isn't always possible to blame the cold winters for everything. The truth is that the risk of breakdowns can be minimized, with the first step being that car owners make sure that their car goes through a pre-winter check, that the anti-freeze levels in their radiator are as they should be, and any other details that will prevent a roadside breakdown from happening.
Mechanically the first place to be checked should be the state of the car’s battery. Batteries that are more than three years old, irrespective of how much the car has been driven, may be passed their best, and should be checked out thoroughly. You don't want to discover that you should have changed your battery when you are up to your knees in snow. If your battery is relatively new, the next thing you need to do is to make sure that all of its cables and connections are in tip top condition. To give it an extra boost, covering your battery with a heating pad at night can be very effective.
The next step is to make sure that there is breakdown insurance on the car, and it is current. Even the most service orientated breakdown company will find it hard to turn out to assist a car that has broken down where the breakdown insurance has been allowed to elapse.
Over the last few years a number of new car breakdown companies have come on the scene and compete well against the larger and more established companies such as RAC and AA. This makes for a comfortable situation when it comes to choosing which company best suits your needs. What’s for sure is not to leave it to chance. Make sure that you have breakdown insurance before hitting the UK roads.
