Breakdown Cover Articles

When owning a car it can sometimes seem that there are so many expenses such as insurance, tax, MOT and servicing, let alone the rising cost of petrol making motoring expensive. It is therefore not surprising that many people don’t take out car breakdown cover as to them it seems an unnecessary expense on top of all the other car bills that need to be paid.

No one expects their car to breakdown especially if it is serviced regularly but you have to remember that the unexpected does happen and if your car breaks down you could be left feeling helpless, powerless and worst of all, vulnerable. It is due to these factors that we believe that car breakdown cover should be considered a necessity when owning a car and there are two main reasons why we believe this.

Firstly, car breakdown cover is crucial for safety and security. Personal safety and security is everyone’s number one concern. There are many situations where your car can breakdown and you will feel that as a driver your safety is and feels compromised. For example, for lone drivers (especially women with children) breaking down is a worrying situation as you can feel exposed and therefore want to get back on the road in the quickest time possible. Also, breaking down can put you in dangerous and risky situations. A seemingly easy flat tyre to change could be made more difficult if this occurs at the side of a busy motorway. Even though you may feel you can handle the situation for your personal safety you should leave it to the experts to reduce any risk to you and your family’s well-being.

Secondly, car breakdown cover is needed due to the complex workings of the modern car. Gone are the days where you use to be able to play around with your car and its engine. Nowadays, cars are complex machines with computer type-systems controlling many of the car’s processes and this therefore makes it harder for you to fix the car yourself at the roadside when a breakdown happens. This is because to investigate your car problems you will no longer be able to just look under the bonnet and try to fix the situation yourself as it will be likely that the car will need to be plugged into sophisticated laptop systems at the garage to find out what has caused the breakdown.

There is also a new phenomenon that seems to be causing car breakdowns and this is the rise in the use of Satellite Navigation Systems and other in-car technologies. Even though they have improved car safety they also can help cause flat batteries and technology such as immobilisers has meant more lock-ins and non-engine start-ups.

If you are still unsure whether car breakdown cover should be purchased then you should take a look at the facts and statistics. According to the RAC they attend 2.5 million breakdowns each year and this equates to 7,000 breakdowns each day with the most common breakdowns happening due to punctured tyres and flat car batteries.

Chances are your car will breakdown as cars are not infallible. So you have to decide whether you really want to run the risk of your car breaking down and not being covered by car maintenance, repair and recovery experts.
