Experienced Drivers More Ready for Breakdowns,
Younger Drivers Less Likely to Have Cover

A British insurance firm has recently completed research regarding the habits of British drivers. The result is a discovery that almost half of all motorists will drive for the pure enjoyment of the experience.

Unfortunately, few of these “joy riders” are taking necessary precautions before leaving on their pleasure trips.

The report found that three quarters of people do not keep details of their breakdown cover policy in the car. The same number of people do not keep emergency equipment.

The report also found that being unprepared was much more common among drivers under 50, who were very unlikely to even check their tyre pressure before leaving.

It is recommended that drivers complete a simple checklist routinely to ensure that their vehicle is in good order before a drive. Here are some of the essentials that the under 50’s may be missing:

• Ensure owner’s manual is in the car.
• Check engine oil, transmission fluid, and engine coolant.
• Check tyres
• Check lights and mirrors.
• Ensure that you have (and know how to use) your spare tyre, wheel wrench and jack.
• You should also have (and know how to use) the components of a basic emergency kit. This can include: Jumper wires, tire sealer-inflator can, tire gauge, flashlight, simple tool kit, and even a spare headlight bulb.

One of the most striking results of this study is the knowledge that most drivers do not keep a copy of their breakdown cover in the car. You should always keep a detailed list of your cover’s information in the car, after all, the car is where you will be if you ever need to use this insurance.
