European Car Breakdown Cover
When taking your car abroad it is essential to consider your car breakdown cover. Often when we are planning a holiday abroad we get consumed by the thoughts of what we will do on our holiday as well as what to pack that we forget the little details, such as ensuring we have the correct car insurance cover as well as whether we are covered or want to be covered by a reputable car breakdown service.
It is essential that you don’t overlook these small details and think that car breakdown “won’t happen to me” as if it does you and your family could be stuck in a foreign country, unable to speak to language and left paying expensive fees for recovery of your car. This will ultimately lead to undue stresses and possibly arguments that will spoil your holiday.
What you need to remember is that European car breakdown cover isn’t as expensive as it sounds. Many of the large reputable car breakdown companies such as Green Flag, the AA and RAC all operate cost-effective European breakdown services which can be purchased on a yearly or short-term (per trip) basis to suit your budget and requirements.
If you decide that you only require European car breakdown for a one-off trip then the short-term option is for you. The short-term cover will cover you for the duration of your holiday and give you access to English-speaking assistance which will be available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, roadside assistance (where they will try and fix your car, if not you will be towed to the nearest garage) and repatriation should you require assistance getting yourself, your passengers and the car back into the UK.
The only thing for you to check is that you are covered for the country which you are travelling to as there may be some countries which fall outside of the cover protection.
If however, you take many trips and holidays to Europe it would be advisable to look at taking out yearly and more comprehensive cover on your car to cover you for the times spent abroad. More comprehensive cover can also mean that as well as the benefits outlined in the short-term option above that you could also get; emergency repairs carried out on the car, alternate transport options, vehicle recovery back to the UK or your onwards destination, emergency accommodation, a replacement driver if you or your driver is taken ill and sourcing and delivery of spare parts.
