Breakdown Cover Articles

When travelling abroad with your car, European breakdown cover can seem an unnecessary expense especially when you have just paid out for the holiday itself and travel insurance among other costs. However, there are many reasons why you should take out breakdown cover, mainly to ensure that your holiday isn’t marred by unplanned and unforeseen car problems.

There can be nothing worse than planning your holiday abroad and then to get there and your car breaks down. This is especially a problem when you can’t speak the language and don’t know where the nearest town or reputable garage is located. You will also have many questions spinning around your head including whether the garage will even have parts for your car, how long the repair will take and how can you get to your destination or back home if required. Do you really want this worry on holiday?

Many people tend to leave the UK and think that their existing policy will cover them or decide that they are willing to take the risk that their car will be okay. But this is often not the case. If you are concerned about the price, then you shouldn’t be. European breakdown cover doesn’t have to be expensive as you can just insure your car for a single trip if your journey abroad is a one-off.

Typically, European breakdown cover will:

  • Protect any driver. This is because a single vehicle will be covered which means that any driver will be insured against a breakdown

  • Roadside assistance and towing. This means that a mechanic will come to where you have broken down and try to get your car working again. If this isn’t possible you will be towed to a suitable garage where you can get the repairs done. Often if right-hand side parts are required your insurance company will help these be located and deliver them to the garage for you

  • Alternative transport. If you need to continue with your onward journey and your car can’t be repaired then you can receive alternate transport costs to get to your destination. This includes transport costs to get home if required (including public transport costs)

  • Emergency accommodation. If your car needs a few days to be repaired then you can recoup accommodation costs through the insurance policy

  • Legal protection. Legal protection is provided for vehicle accident claims as well as motoring offences.

As well as this many insurance companies ensure that you have 24/7 access to an English speaking helpline to ensure the highest levels of customer service and reassurance for you.

So if you are considering a driving holiday abroad, it is fully recommended that you take out European breakdown cover. That way you and your family can enjoy your holiday knowing that if any problems arise with the car that you will be covered and disruption to your holiday plans will be minimal and worry-free.
